They may not be able to blink, stir or speak the way we do, but they communicate messages that a thousand words can not. Keep looking at them and then these lifeless statues appear to be bustling with life. Through their silence, they criticize social Evils, pay tribute to maestros, celebrate festive days and even try to rouse the humanity lying dormant in us. On the beach of Puri, Manas Sahoo keeps sculpting them and each time, the statues have something to say that is relevant to culture society and people. The sculptures are certainly rare and Manas seems focus more on the artistic elements in the sculpture than the number and size of them. It’s painfully surprising that the artist, despite his single handed effort to develop the art itself, seldom gets any state support to inspire him to reach even greater heights of his art.
